LANDMARK STATUS SOUGHT FOR
ST. MARY'S MOTHERHOUSE
Buffalo News, May 19, 1999 by Jay Rey
Amherst residents this week encouraged town officials to designate the St. Mary of the Angels motherhouse at 400 Mill St. as a local historic landmark.
Several residents spoke in favor of the designation during a public hearing on the issue at Monday night's Amherst Town Board meeting.
Amherst's Historic Preservation Commission recommended the Town Board issue the designation because of the building's high level of integrity, design and craftsmanship, among other reasons.
Amherst and the state are buying the four-story motherhouse and the surrounding 85-plus acres -- much of which will be used for a state park -- from the Sisters of St. Francis religious order.
The Town Board, in fact, decided to wait on the historic designation until the town actually takes ownership of the building.
The deal should be closed and property turned over sometime in August, said Town Attorney Phillip A. Thielman.
