Reist Mill at Amherst State Park

Everybody's Column

Buffalo News January 7, 2009

Arson is shameful idea for beautiful landmark

The Dec. 30 column written by Bruce Andriatch was both unprofessional and frightening when referencing the Williamsville Mill and the "likely agenda" of the board of trustees, which read: "Arson?" We have recently lost the historic Reist Mill Barn in Williamsville to arson, and to plant that seed in anyone's mind is incredibly irresponsible.

The mill is almost 200 years old and is on the National, State and Local Historic Registers and it is the reason there is a Williamsville. It was built as a seat of commerce in 1811 and to this day serves the community.

Last month we welcomed hundreds of families to the mill for a visit with Santa, complete with pictures to commemorate the visit. Many families were surprised to see the building in such good condition, beautifully decorated for the season and comfortable, warm and inviting. This in spite of recent media attention suggesting it was in a run-down and terrible condition. The building certainly needs work and a coat of paint, however, it has been standing for almost 200 years and still has so much to offer local residents.

Shame on Andriatch for suggesting arson is the answer to the future restoration of this true landmark. Instead, get involved and help us find the future use of this beautiful old building. Articles like this serve no purpose.
